The invention relates to a method for designing an internal combustion engine capable of lean running having an exhaust gas system provided with a catalytic converter. The catalytic converter comprises a three-way coating having an additional NO, storage component, wherein in lean running operation with a partial load 50% NO, saturation is achieved within a time period of between 20 and 60 seconds. The invention further relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine capable of lean running having a catalytic converter having a three-way coating having an additional NOx storage component, wherein in lean running operation with a partial load 50% NO, saturation is achieved within a time period of between 20 and 60 seconds and enriching the air/fuel mixture for component protection occurs only at a temperature of more than 800{C. The NOx storage component is a rare earth metal based component, particularly Barium, and the arrangement enables regeneration of the NOx storage component without the need for complex control arrangements.
