PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for producing a silicon nitride based sintered compact where β type silicon nitride can be grown upon firing, and further, most of silicon nitride in the sintered compact after the firing can be formed of β type silicon nitride, thus high strength and thermal impact resistance can be imparted, and to provide a silicon nitride based sintered compact produced by the method. SOLUTION : In the method for producing a silicon nitride based sintered compact where silicon nitride including β type silicon nitride crystals is mixed with a sintering assistant, and the mixture is fired, as the sintering assistant, oxynitride glass obtained by melting rare earth oxide, magnesium oxide and silicon dioxide and further melting nitride in such a manner that nitrogen is made into a supersaturated state is used.
