PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides in an exhaust gas formed by burning a fuel in a lean condition with a high selectivity without causing the degradation of a catalyst and the worsening of fuel efficiency.
SOLUTION : The method for the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides wherein nitrogen oxides in an exhaust gas formed by burning a fuel in a lean condition is catalytically reduced by allowing the exhaust gas to contact a catalyst in the presence of a sulfur oxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen is characterized by using a catalyst comprising (A) 95.0 to 99.5% by weight of zeolite and (B) 0.5 to 5.0% by weight of rhodium. The above catalyst may further comprise at least one species (C) selected from an alkali metal, an alkali earth metal, and a rare earth element as a co-catalyst.
