PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a luminaire and an image display device using a green phosphor having green luminance higher than that of a conventional rare earth-activated sialon phosphor, and having durability more excellent than that of a conventional oxide phosphor. SOLUTION : In this luminaire containing a light emitting light source and a phosphor or this image display device containing an excitation source and the phosphor, the phosphor contains the crystal phase of a nitride or an oxynitride having a β-type Si3N4 crystalline structure obtained by making a metal element M (M is one or more kinds of element selected from Mn, Ce, and Eu) into a solid solution in the crystal of the nitride or the oxynitride having the β-type Si3N4 crystalline structure, and emits fluorescence having a peak at a wavelength within a range from 500 nm to 600nm by irradiating the light emitting light source or the excitation source.
