Conventional inorganic marking particles, with specific individual characteristics with regard to surfaces and properties for detectable characterisation of products with known original information relating to proof of authenticity, display a structured surface in order to generate a characteristic reflection or emission spectrum with fluorescent marking particles under appropriate illumination. The production of such marking particles is however relatively complex and reproducibility and hence originality are not fully guaranteed. The inventive marking particles are based on the bio-mineralised shell structures of biological microorganisms, for example diatomacae or radiolaria and in application are directly optically detectable with the complex appearance thereof and guarantee the highest authentication protection from counterfeiting and plagiarism by the specific individual characteristics thereof. The above is due to the rare occurrence or cultivation of the microorganisms in connection with various technical preparations concerning the shell structure itself or the conditions for cultivation generating the same. The biogenic marking particles preferably have a size range of 1 nm to 2 mm and can be applied to or in the product or in a support material.
