PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an inexpensive dielectric ceramic safely obtained by a combustion synthesis method and excellent in sintered compact characteristics, and to provide a method for production thereof. SOLUTION : The dielectric ceramic is represented by the composition formula, MTiO3(M is one of group II elements) or BaRe2TimO2m+4(m is an integer and 3≤m≤7; and Re is a rare-earth element). The method for production of the ceramic comprises preparing a reacting material at least containing a titanium hydride (Ti(H)) powder having a specific surface area of 0.01-2 m2/g and a substance being an oxygen supply source, blending the respective substances at prescribed ratios, and applying to the resultant material, the combustion synthesis method to be performed at an adiabatic flame temperature of ≥1, 500°C.
