PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To drive a semiconductor laser to an extent of a capacity in accordance with a use environment in an optical amplifier comprising the semiconductor laser for a pump light output. SOLUTION : The optical amplifier inputs pump light to a rare earth dope optical fiber 1 through an optical coupler 8, and amplifies an input optical signal Pin. The optical amplifier is provided with a case temperature detector 13 detecting a temperature of a semiconductor laser case 5 sealing the semiconductor laser 2; and a control circuit 7 comparing a detection temperature by the case temperature detector 13 with a temperature upper limit value which is previously set in the semiconductor laser case 5, setting and changing an upper limit value of an optical output level of the semiconductor laser 2 so that the upper limit value rises when the detection temperature is lower than the temperature upper limit value, and supplying a driving current to the semiconductor laser 2 in a range in which the upper limit value does not exceed the upper limit value of the optical output level.
