PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a catalyst for a methanol pole which has high methanol oxidizing activity and is hardly poisoned and can maintain catalytic activity over a long period of time by constituting it of alloy of platinum group elements and rare earth elements which contains an intermetallic compound of a platinum group element and a rare earth element and a compound having a (-CF2 SO3 ) group. SOLUTION : An intermetallic compound of a platinum group element and a rare earth element is contained in alloy of one or more kinds of platinum group elements and one or more kinds of rare earth elements. A catalyst composed of this alloy and a compound having a (-CF2 SO3 ) group is used as a methanol pole, and a methanol fuel cell is obtained. An ion exchange resin composed of a copolymer of CF3 -(CF2 )n -SO3 H (n=0 to 12) or olefin and CF2 = CF-(OCF2 CFX)m -Oq -(CF2 )p -A (m=0 to 3, and p=1 to 12, and q=0 or 1, and X is F or a trifluoromethyl group, and A is a sulfonic acid type functional group), is desirable as the compound having this (-CF2 SO3 ) group. The alloy is used by being carried on carbon.
