PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an optical amplifier equipped with a structure for more effectively suppressing over/undershoot of a transient response in a high speed AGC. SOLUTION : An optical amplifier 1 is an optical device for amplifying an input signal light and is equipped with a rare earth element addition optical fiber 11, optical couplers 21 to 23, light receivers 31, 32, an excitation light source 33, and a controller 40. Especially, as the typical configuration of the optical amplifier 1, the cutoff frequency λc of the rare earth element addition optical fiber 11 is set to be longer than an excitation light wavelength λp and shorter than a signal light wavelength λs, and mainly allows a propagation of an excitation light component of a base mode. Moreover, entrance of the excitation light and the signal light into the rare earth element addition optical fiber 11 are carried out so that only the excitation light component and a signal light component of the base mode may be propagated inside the rare earth element addition optical fiber 11 in the status where the rare earth element addition optical fiber 11 is straightly extended.
