The present invention aims to improve intermittent cycle characteristics in a lithium ion secondary battery which contains, as a positive electrode active material, a lithium complex oxide mainly containing nickel or cobalt. Specifically disclosed is a lithium ion secondary battery wherein the positive electrode contains active material particles composed of a lithium complex oxide. The lithium complex oxide is represented by the following general formula (1) : LixM1-yLyO2 (wherein 0.85 ≤ x ≤ 1.25, 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.50, the element M represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ni and Co, and the element L represents at least one element selected from the group consisting of alkaline earth elements, transition metal elements, rare earth elements, group IIIb elements and group IVb elements). The surface layers of the active material particles contain at least one element Le selected from the group consisting of Al, Mn, Ti, Mg, Zr, Nb, Mo, W and Y, and the active material particles are surface-treated with a coupling agent.
