Catalyst for exhaust gas purification (1) comprising a rare earth element, an alkaline earth element, zirconium and a noble metal, wherein the atomic ratio of alkaline earth element to the sum of rare earth element and zirconium is in the range of 0.1 to less than 10 at.%, and wherein a part of rare earth element and a part of zirconium together with at least a part of alkaline earth element form a composite oxide, this composite oxide together with a part of noble metal forming a solid solution.
