PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a compact, low-cost discharge element excellent in characteristics stability, heat resistance, and anti-surge characteristics. SOLUTION : The discharge element is provided with an envelope member 2 made of an electric insulating material and fitted with a through-hole 3, and discharge electrode members 4, 5 forming a sealing space 6 to be a discharge gap between themselves and installed opposed to each other so as to close each open end of the through-hole 3. The envelope member 2 is made of electric insulating oxide containing Zn and Ti. The discharge electrode members 4, 5 is made of low-resistance oxide containing rare earth elements, alkali earth metal elements and Mn, and that, with a specific resistance within the range of 10-4 to 1 Ωcm.
