PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for easily manufacturing a rare earth iron garnet having a large ionic radius and excellent Faraday rotation ability in a short time. SOLUTION : The method for manufacturing a garnet composition expressed by general formula : A(3-x)BxFe5O12 includes steps of preparing a source material of the garnet composition in an approximately sphere form having a predetermined composition, suspending the source material in air, heating the suspended source material to melt, and rapidly cooling the heated source material to obtain the garnet composition. In the general formula, A represents an ion possessing a 24C position in the garnet and is capable of forming a stable garnet phase in a thermal equilibrium state having a composition expressed by general formula A3Fe5O12; B represents an ion that can substitute A in the garnet phase and having an ionic radius larger than A; x represents a number represented by x>p, wherein p is the maximum composition ratio of B in the stable garnet phase in a thermal equilibrium state.
