PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain a high activity catalyst excellent in reaction accelerating action in conversion of CO2 into methane by reaction with H2 under atmospheric pressure and capable of converting a large amt. of CO2 into methane at a high rate by subjecting a precursor made of a specified amorphous alloy to oxidation- reduction treatment. SOLUTION : A precursor made of an amorphous alloy is subjected to oxidation-reduction treatment to obtain the objective amorphous alloy catalyst for conversion of CO2 into methane. The amorphous alloy consists of =8atom.% Zr and <=5atom.% one or more kinds of rare earth elements selected from among Y, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb and Dy and the balance essentially Co and/or Ni. In the presence of the catalyst, a large amt. of CO2 can be efficiently converted into methane by reaction under atmospheric pressure.
