Provided is a light amplifier comprising a Raman amplifying medium (2), a rare earth element added fiber (3), a first excited light output unit (4-1), a variable distribution element (5) and a control unit (30). The rare earth element added fiber (3) is disposed at the downstream stage of the Raman amplifier medium (2). The first excited light output unit (4-1) can output excited lights of a plurality of wavelengths for enabling both the Raman amplifying medium (2) and the rare earth element added fiber (3) to perform an amplifying action on a wavelength-multiplexed signal light. The variable distribution element (5) can distribute the excited lights of plural wavelengths outputted from the first excited light output unit (4-1) at distribution ratios variable for individual wavelengths, as the excited lights to the Raman amplifying medium (2) and the rare earth element added fiber (3). The control unit (30) controls the distribution ratios of the excited lights of plural wavelengths at the variable distribution element (5) and the powers of the excited lights of plural wavelengths coming from the first excited light output unit (4-1), individually according to the wavelength arrangements of the individual signal lights having wavelengths multiplexed on the wavelength multiplexed signal lights.
