PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an aluminum nitride-based fluorescent substance having good fluorescence characteristics on an industrial scale. SOLUTION : This aluminum nitride-based fluorescent substance contains at least one kind of a transition element and a rare earth element and further contains aluminum, wherein an aluminum-based component which does not combine with nitrogen is contained in an amount of ≤1 wt.%. The method for producing the aluminum nitride-based fluorescent substance comprises subjecting a raw material containing at least one kind of the transition element and the rare earth element and further containing the aluminum to nitriding synthesis in an atmosphere containing nitrogen, and then firing the synthesized material at a temperature higher than 1, 050°C in an atmosphere containing the nitrogen.
