PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an inorganic optical material which can generate a wideband fluorescence spectrum, while suppressing the background loss, and to provide a light source, a Michelson interferometer, an optical coherent tomography device, and an optical amplifier which can have a wide gain band. SOLUTION : The inorganic optical material is characterized by containing at least one kind of rare earth elements, being colorless, and having a full width at half maximum of the fluorescence spectrum wider than 50 nm. Because the full width at half maximum of the fluorescence spectrum is so wider, a wideband fluorescence can be obtained by the inorganic optical material. Further, for example, when the wavelength at a peak of the fluorescence spectrum generated from the inorganic optical material is in the vicinity of the C band, a 20 μm or less resolution can be realized with an interference type optical sensor using a light source comprising the inorganic optical material. Further, because the inorganic optical material is colorless, it can suppress the background loss. COPYRIGHT : (C)2006, JPO&NCIPI
