PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an electrode for a lithium secondary battery giving excellent cycle characteristics and charge/discharge characteristics. SOLUTION : Powder raw material containing an electrode active material is made carried by a base material by a gas deposition method. As the electrode active material, an alloy or an intermetallic compound of Mg and a group 14 element, an alloy or an intermetallic compound of a rare earth element and group 14 element, oxide of silicon, oxide of tin, lithium cobalt complex oxide, lithium nickel complex oxide, lithium manganese complex oxide or the like are preferable. Further, as the powder raw material, one with an average particle diameter of 0.1 to 50 μm obtained by a mechanical alloying method or a mechanical milling method is preferable. Since the electrode active material layer is formed by the gas deposition method, an adhesiveness between the base material and active material particles can be made strong, densities can be made heterogeneous, and stress at insertion of lithium into the active material layer can be alleviated, so that exfoliation of the active material layer due to repetition of lithium storage/release can be effectively restrained.
