The lamp (1) has a discharge vessel (2) enclosed by a transparent bulb (17) and electrodes (6) melted gas-tight into the discharge vessel and electrically connected by current leads through the bulb to at least one base (20). The vessel wall consists of quartz, the vessel is elliptical with defined parameters, is externally coated with thermal reflection material (16) and the ionisable filling contains mercury, a starter gas and metal halogenide.
