PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To prevent significant increase of a battery internal pressure in a final charging stage of a nickel hydrogen storage battery by forming a layer consisting mainly of an A1 compound on the surface of a hydrogen storing alloy electrode. SOLUTION : Hydrogen storing alloy containing Mm (a mixture of rare earth metals) Ni, Co, Al, Mn at predetermined ratios is heated and crushed into alloy powder with about 60 μm of a mean grain size. To this alloy powder, a predetermined quantity of polyethylene oxide solution serving as a binder is added, and then mixed and kneaded together, and a paste is formed. This paste is applied to both faces of a collector made of punching metal and dried to form an electrode. Subsequently, solution containing about 1 wt.% of aluminum chloride is applied to the surface of the electrode and dried. As the solution applied or stuck to the surface of the electrode, a substance containing about 0.5 wt.% of aluminum chloride and about 0.5 wt.% of carbon serving as a gas absorbing catalyst may be used.
