PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain an optical amplifier which prevents the progress of the reduction of the life of an exiting light source and stabilizes the constant control of the output light of the exciting light source. SOLUTION : The amplifier comprises a drive circuit 4a for driving an exciting light source 5a with a fixed driving current, a drive circuit 4b for driving an exciting light source 5b with a driving current corresponding to a variable control signal inputted to the light source 5b, an optical combiner 6 for optically combining exciting light generated by the exciting light sources 5a, 5b to feed a rare earth added optical fiber 1 theirwith, an optical divider 7 for optically dividing the combined light from the combiner 6, and a comparator 10 for outputting the variable control signal to the drive circuit 4b to make their divided light constant of a reference value. It drives the exciting light source 5a with a fixed driving current, and even if the light source 5a deteriorates, variably controls the driving current of the exciting light source 5b without variably controlling the constant driving current. This prevents the progress of the reduction of the life of its light source 5a, even if the light source 5a is deteriorated. COPYRIGHT : (C)2006, JPO&NCIPI
