PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnetic recording medium having coercive force suitable for the magnetic recording medium and having excellent corrosion resistance and thermal stability. SOLUTION : In the magnetic recording medium having a magnetic recording layer containing magnetic particles of a rare earth-transition metal-semimetal having 5 to 50 nm particle diameter and a binder on a non-magnetic substrate, the magnetic particles have 10 to 15 at% rare earth, 70 to 80 at% transition metal and 5 to 15 at% semimetal, the transition metal is selected from Fe, Ni and Co and when its component is represented by Fe(100-x-y)CoxNiy, x=0 to 45 at% and y=25 to 30 at% or x=45 to 50 at% and y=10 to 25 at%.
