PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a catalyst and method having high NOx cleaning capacity especially against high temp. exhaust gas of 400 deg.C or higher. SOLUTION : In a catalyst for cleaning exhaust gas constituted of a carrier containing titania and zirconia, the NOx occluding material comprising at least one of alkali metal, alkaline earth metal and rare earth elements carried on the carrier and noble metal carried on the carrier, the weight ratio of zirconia in the carrier is 50-90 wt.%, pref., 50-80 wt.%, more pref., 60-80 wt.% per the total weight of zirconia and titania.
