PURPOSE : Provided are a thiogallate phosphor which is improved in luminous efficiency and can replace a YAG : Ce or orthosilicate phosphor, and a white light emitting device containing the phosphor. CONSTITUTION : The thiogallate phosphor is represented by (A_(1-x-y) Eu_x M^III_6)(B_(2-y) M^II_y)S_4, wherein A is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Ba, Sr and Ca; B is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Al, Ga and In; M^III is at least one rare earth element selected from the group consisting of Sc, La, Gd and Lu; M^II is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mg, Zn and Be; 0.005
