PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a high-strength glass member having drastically improved crack resistance, and applicable to thinning and lightening objects.
SOLUTION : A compressively stressed layer is formed on the surface part of oxide-based glass containing at least one kind of rare earth element selected from the group consisting of Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu and further containing at least an Si element and an alkali metal element (s). The content of the rare earth element(s) is 1 to 10 wt.% expressed in terms of oxide, and the compressively stressed layer is formed by chemical strengthening by alkali metal ion exchange. Rare earth oxide is added to glass composed of silicon oxide and alkali oxide so as to be high strength glass HIG, and chemical strengthening is applied thereto so as to form a chemically strengthened layer CSL on the surface of the glass.
