A nickel based superalloy has a composition comprising (by weight) : 3-7 % chromium, 3-15 % cobalt, 4.5-8 % tungsten, 3.3-6 % rhenium, 4-8 % tantalum, 0.8-2 % titanium, 4.5-6.5 % aluminium, 0.1-6 % ruthenium, 0.01-0.2 % hafnium, less than 0.5 % molybdenum, <=0.06 % carbon, <=0.01 % boron, <=0.01 % zirconium, <=0.005 % oxygen, <=0.005 % nitrogen, optionally 0.1-100 ppm of a rare earth, with the balance being nickel and impurities. Single crystal turbine blades can be made from the alloy, solution treating and ageing to form the gamma prime phase.
