PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an alkaline secondary battery which can maintain the long charge-discharge cycle service life even if an alkaline electrolyte quantity is reduced to attain further high capacity by restraining consumption of alkaline electrolyte at charge-discharge cycle time. SOLUTION : An alkaline secondary battery is provided with a vessel 1, a paste type negative electrode 4 which is housed in the vessel 1 and is composed of a rare earth-nickel system containing zirconium in a range of 0.001 to 0.01 in the atomic ratio and contains hydrogen absorbing alloy whose specific surface area by a BET method is 0.05 to 0.2m /g, a paste type positive electrode 2 housed in the vessel 1 so as to be arranged to the negative electrode by sandwiching a separator and alkaline electrolyte housed in the vessel 1 so that the liquid ratio becomes 0.8 to 1.5ml /Ah.
