PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a mercury-free metal halide lamp in which the occurrence of emission flickering is suppressed, and an illumination device using this. SOLUTION : The metal halide lamp MHL is equipped with a translucent airtight container 1 with an inner volume of 0.5 cc or less, a pair of electrodes 1b, 1b that are arranged opposing each other at an electrode gap of 5 mm or less in the translucent airtight container 1 and are sealed, and an electric discharge medium which contains halide compounds of a plurality of metals selected from scandium (Sc), sodium (Na), indium (In), zinc (Zn) and a group of rare earth metals, and rare gases and is essentially free from mercury and which is sealed in the translucent air-tight container, and in which a tube wall load is 60 W/cm2 or more, and when moisture in the translucent airtight container is A (ng), and a lighting frequency is f (Hz) when a rectangular wave AC is impressed and the lamp is lit, a formula : A/√f≤4.5 is satisfied.
