PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To make the surface of a magnetostrictive material composed of an alloy consisting essentially of rare earth elements and iron and obtained by a powder metallurgical method less liable to be oxidized over a long period. SOLUTION : A silicon dioxide (SiO2) film is deposited on the surface of a magnetostrictive material having a composition satisfying Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe2 by a plasma CVD process.
