PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a discharge lamp lighting device, a discharge lamp lighting circuit, and a discharge lamp lighting method which can improve the luminous efficiency of an outer-electrode-type discharge lamp, by controlling the rectangular wave voltage which is supplied to the lamp.
SOLUTION : In this discharge lamp 2, a discharge lamp lighting circuit 1 that generates a rectangular wave voltage, having a positive voltage of +V1 (1kV) and a negative voltage of -V2 (-0.8kV), is connected to a discharge lamp 2 so as to supply the positive voltage V1 to an inner electrode 21 and the negative voltage -V2 to an outer electrode 22; the negative voltage level of the inner electrode 21, with respect to the positive voltage level of the outer electrode 22 is made to be asymmetric; and the current waveform of a current flowing between both electrodes is made to be symmetric by making smaller the absolute value of the negative voltage -V2 than the absolute value V2 of the positive voltage +V1. As a result of this, a diffuse discharge can be maintained and a contracted discharge occurrence is prevented, thus the phenomenon in which rare gas does not emit lights by showing no exitation though a large current is flowing is prevented, thereby improving the luminous efficiency.
