A phosphor has a formula selected from the group consisting of Sr4-a-zAaEuzD12O22 and Sr4-a-zAaEuzD14O25; wherein A is at least an alkaline-earth metal other than strontium; D is an element selected from the group consisting of Group-13 metals, Group-3 metals, and rare-earth metals other than europium; 0 0. The phosphor can be used in light sources and displays. In particular, A may be calcium, calcium and barium or magnesium and D may be aluminium or aluminium and lanthanum. A phosphor blend comprises the phosphor and a red light-emitting phosphor. Methods for making a phosphor comprises firing oxygen-containing materials comprising europium, at least two alkaline earth metals and at least a Group-13 metal in a reducing atmosphere at about 1000 {C to 1400 {C.
