METHOD FOR PRODUCING 1-INDANONES

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for inexpensively and readily producing 1-indanones useful as a synthetic intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals by carrying out dehydrating condensation of an aromatic hydrocarbon with α, β-unsaturated carboxylic acids so as to suppress production of chemical substances causing environmental contamination. SOLUTION : The method for producing 1-indanones represented by general formula comprises reacting an aromatic hydrocarbon represented by general formula with an α, β-unsaturated carboxylic acid represented by general formula in the presence of the catalytic amount of Lewis acid represented by the general formula MXm-Ln (wherein M is a metal ion selected from a rare earth element, bismuth, gallium, indium and hafnium; X is an anion; L is a neutral molecule having coordination force; m is a valence number of the metal M; n is an integer of 0-10). The method enables production of 1-indanone in a step shorter than steps of a conventional method.
