PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a catalyst for exhaust gas purification comprising a noble metal catalyst whose catalytic activity does not deteriorate improperly even under severe conditions of 900 deg.C or higher. SOLUTION : This catalyst for exhaust gas purification is produced by depositing Pt and Rh together on a granular zirconium-containing compound oxide having the formula; Zr1-(x+y) Cex Ry O2-z (wherein R is one or more elements selected from rare earth elements and Al except cerium; z is the oxygen deficiency amount determined based on the oxidation number and the contents of rare earth elements and Al; 0.1<=x+y<=0.5; 0.1<=x<=0.5; and 0<=y<=0.2) and coating a heat resistant supporting carrier with the resultant zirconium- containing compound oxide together with oxygen-storage rare earth oxides.
