PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain a luminescent material containing a composite particle produced by including a metal carbide in a specific capsule structure, effective for preventing the deterioration of the metal carbide, making the capsule structure function as a luminescent material by the electrical conductivity and band gap of the carbide and useful for electronic devices. SOLUTION : This luminescent material contains a composite particle 32 consisting of a single crystal or amorphous metal carbide 30 included in a graphite capsule structure 31 having ultrafine particle form (e.g. a single crystal or amorphous carbide of a typical metal, a transition metal, a lanthanoid rare earth metal or an actinoid metal included in a capsule structure composed of a multilayered or monolayered graphite sheet having a dimension of nano- meter order). Light is emitted by exciting the material with beam irradiation energy, electric field energy, etc.
