PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an ultrahigh pressure mercury lamp which radiates high-luminance UV light and has a higher degree of UV light output stability compared with a conventional ultrahigh pressure mercury lamp, and to provide a light irradiation device using the ultrahigh pressure mercury lamp. SOLUTION : The ultrahigh pressure mercury lamp comprises a pair of a cathode 3 and an anode 4 that are made of tungsten and are opposed to each other in a discharge container 2 made of quartz glass. Mercury of not less than 0.16 mg/mm3, a rare gas, and a predetermined amount of halogen are enclosed in the discharge container 2. The cathode 3 is made of high-purity tungsten with a purity of not less than 4N (99.99%). The discharge container 2 contains oxygen at a ratio of 0.05 to 0.45% with respect to the sealed gas pressure of the rare gas. The ultrahigh pressure mercury lamp 1 is lit up under constant-current control. The light irradiation device comprises the ultrahigh pressure mercury lamp 1, and a light switching means for allowing the light emitted from the ultrahigh pressure mercury lamp 1 to pass therethrough by switching between light of ultraviolet region and light of visible region.
