PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method of manufacturing a rare earth magnet which obtains the rare earth element magnet having sufficiently excellent corrosion resistance, and also to provide the rare earth magnet. SOLUTION : The method of manufacturing the rare earth magnet includes a step of forming a protective layer containing an oxygen and/or a nitrogen near the front surface of the metal layer, by bringing a mixed chemical seed containing plasma-excited oxygen and/or the nitrogen and a rare gas into contact with the metal layer provided on the front surface of a magnet element containing the rare earth element.
