PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a luminescent material which intensely emits light even at room temperature and is easily handled. SOLUTION : At least 1 mol% rare earth complex having organic radical ligands is added to a transparent or translucent medium. The organic radical ligands are exemplified by ones including nitroxide radicals, butylaminoxyl radicals, TEMPO radicals, semiquinone radicals, verdazyl radicals, or the like. Thus, it is possible to obtain the luminescent material which can intensely emit light upon being irradiated with excitation light of a low energy intensity.
