An organic electroluminescent element comprising a negative electrode and a positive electrode and, interposed therebetween, one or more organic thin film layers including a luminescent layer containing at least a phosphorescent luminous compound, which organic electroluminescent element further comprises an electron injection layer bonded to the negative electrode, the electron injection layer comprising as a main component at least one member selected from among metal chelate complexes of nitrogenous ring, nitrogenous 5-membered ring derivatives, noncondensed nitrogenous 6-membered ring derivatives and condensed nitrogenous 6-membered ring derivatives having one carbon ring condensed and comprising as a reducing dopant at least one member selected from among alkali metals, alkali metal complexes, alkali metal compounds, alkaline earth metals, alkaline earth metal complexes, alkaline earth metal compounds, rare earth metals, rare earth metal complexes and rare earth metal compounds. This organic electroluminescent element realizes phosphorescent luminescence and exhibits high luminous efficiency and prolonged durability. © KIPO & WIPO 2007
