PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To obtain a catalyst for cleaning exhaust gas, which exhibits cleaning performance even at high temperatures. SOLUTION : This catalyst for cleaning exhaust gas is obtained by depositing an alkali metal and a noble metal on a crystalline zirconium compound oxide. A part of the zirconium in the zirconium compound oxide is displaced with at least one element selected from the group consisting of alkaline-earth metals, rare-earth metals, and elements of the group IIIB. The elongation of a crystal lattice by the element displacement is nearly the same as a theoretical value.
