PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an austenitic stainless steel for a fuel reformer, which has both such a durability that the adhesion of an oxide film is not deteriorated and economical efficiency, even if heating and cooling cycle are repeated upon starting and stopping of the fuel reformer under an environment of reformed gas, without depending on the addition of a rare earth element or Ni.SOLUTION : The austenitic stainless steel contains, by mass%, Cr : 15 to 25%, C : 0.1% or less, Si : 5% or less, Mn : 3% or less, P : 0.05% or less, S : 0.01% or less, Ni : 8 to 18%, Cu : 3% or less, Mo; 3% or less and N : 0.3% or less. The austenitic stainless steel further contains one or more kind of Nb : 0.01 to 0.5%, Ti : 0.01 to 0.5%, V : 0.01 to 0.5%, Al : 0.01 to 0.5%, B : 0.005% or less and Mg : 0.005% or less. It is preferable that a Cr-based oxide layer containing Si or Mn is formed in the surface and two or more kinds of Si oxide, Mn oxide, Nb oxide, Ti oxide and Al oxide coexist between the Cr-based oxide layer and a base material.
