PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a visible light reaction type photocatalyst which is doped with a rare earth element and exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity even in a visible light region besides an ultraviolet light region and a method which can easily produce the catalyst by low temperature heat treatment without needing an expensive apparatus.
SOLUTION : In the method for producing the visible light reaction type photocatalyst, a solution containing a titanium alkoxide (for example titanium tetraisopropoxide), a rare earth element compound (for example praseodymium chloride), and an organic solvent (for example 2-methoxyethanol) is hydrolyzed, and the obtained sol is heat-treated at 300°C or above (preferably at 300-750°C). The catalyst contains a rare earth element (for example praseodymium) doped in titanium oxide and is sensitive to visible light.
