PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a steel strand serving for a raw material of a welding steel wire which can realize constantly stable spray transfer, reduce generation of spattering even when high heat input welding is performed, and obtain an excellent manufacturing property in a carbon dioxide gas-shielded arc welding using shield gas consisting mainly of gaseous carbon dioxide. SOLUTION : The steel strand contains, by mass, ≤ 0.20% C, ≤ 2.5% Si, 0.25-3.5% Mn, ≤ 0.0200% O, ≤ 0.0050% Ca, 0.025-0.050% rare earth elements, ≤ 0.05% P and ≤ 0.025% S, and the F-value is set to be ≤ 6.0, which is calculated by the formula : F = 10, 000 x [REM] × [S].
