PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To produce an alumina-based sintered compact having a high strength and hardness without damaging chemical and thermal stability. SOLUTION : This alumina-based sintered compact consists essentially of an Al2 O3 crystal grain and further includes >=0.5 vol.% total of one or more kinds of compounds selected from TiO2 , Al2 TiO5 and RE2 TiO7 (RE is a rare earth element), and MgAl2 O4 in the crystal grain of the Al2 O3 as a granular body of <=3 μm average particle diameter.
