PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method of manufacturing a cerium-based abrasive material which does not increase grit even in the presence of fluorine and has a high performance of abrasive properties such that it has a high abrasive value and evolves fewer flaws after abrasion, and a cerium-based abrasive material prepared by the manufacturing method. SOLUTION : There are provided a method of manufacturing a cerium-based abrasive material which comprises fluorinating cerium-containing rare earths in the manufacturing process with a hydrofluoric acid solution having a hydrofluoric acid concentration of not less than 1 wt.% and less than 30 wt.%, and a cerium-based abrasive material prepared by the manufacturing method.
