A rare earth magnet 1, or a method of making a rare earth magnet, comprises : depositing dysprosium 3 onto only one or more particular parts of the surface of a rare earth magnet body 2. The dysprosium 3 may be deposited by a cold spray process which provides one or more beads onto particular surface locations of a sintered rare earth alloy body 2 with a grain structure 5. The sprayed magnet may be subjected to a heat treatment which induces a grain boundary diffusion process for the dysprosium to form shell layers 6 around one or more grains. The magnet 1 may include a neodymium alloy, such as Nd2Fe14B. The magnet 1 may make efficient use of the dysprosium material.
