Provided are : a positive electrode active material which is capable of suppressing deterioration of the battery capacity and gas generation during storage at high temperatures in a charged state; and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery which is provided with this positive electrode active material. Positive electrode active material particles (20) which comprise : lithium transition metal oxide particles (21) that contain halogen atoms; and rare earth compound particles (22) which adhere to the surfaces of the lithium transition metal oxide particles (21). The amount of the halogen atoms present in the surfaces of the lithium transition metal oxide particles (21) is 5% by mass or less of the total amount of the halogen atoms contained in the lithium transition metal oxide particles (21). A rare earth element that constitutes the rare earth compound particles (22) is a rare earth element other than yttrium and scandium.
