Colloidal dispersion comprises amorphous particles of an iron compound and optionally particles of a rare earth metal compound in an organic phase containing an amphiphile. Independent claims are also included for : (1) production of the colloidal dispersion by reacting a complex of an iron salt and a water-soluble carboxylic acid having a pKa of at least 3 with a base at a pH of 8 or less, contacting the resulting precipitate with an organic phase containing an amphiphile, and optionally mixing the resulting dispersion with a colloidal dispersion of a rare earth metal compound in an organic phase; and (2) a motor fuel containing the colloidal dispersion.
