The sensor has an amplifier fiber section (1) connected to an end of a short Bragg mirror (3), where the section is doped by rare earth ions such as erbium ion. An interrogation laser is provided at another end of the Bragg mirror. The reflection of the laser on the Bragg mirror produces a wave that is interfered with an incident wave for provoking periodic saturation of gain of the fiber section. An independent claim is also included for a method for realizing a physical quantity sensor using wave guides with optically pumped amplifying medium.
