PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a solid electrolyte having resistance against thermal shock on heat cycle caused by repeated temperature rise and fall between an atmospheric temperature and a solid oxide fuel battery operation temperature (600-950°C) associated with activation/stop of a solid oxide fuel battery, and superior resistance against thermal shock caused by a rapid heating to the operation temperature or a rapid temperature fall at the time of stop.
SOLUTION : A solid electrolyte according to the present invention is a solid electrolyte for solid oxide fuel batteries which comprises : a zirconium oxide; a yttrium oxide; and an oxide of a rare earth element other than yttrium. The content of the yttrium oxide is 3-12 mol%; and the content of the oxide of a rare earth element other than yttrium is 0.5 to less than 10.0 mass% to the total mass of the yttrium oxide and the oxide of a rare earth element other than yttrium.
