The present invention relates to a vapour hydrocarbon pre-reforming catalyst containing in its formulation nickel and rare earths that are supported on alumina, magnesium or calcium aluminates, such as to increase resistance to coke deposition, and to a method for preparing the catalyst. In addition, the present invention relates to a method for producing hydrogen or synthesis gas by vapour pre-reforming of olefin-containing hydrocarbons in the presence of the catalyst obtained according to the present invention.
